DMH Hiker Responsibilities

  •  Eat a good breakfast the morning of a hike.
  • Bring adequate food, snacks and hydration for the hike.
  • Carry the “ten essentials” for a hike in a backpack.
  • Wear proper footwear designed for hiking.
  • Stay with group unless released by hike leader.
  • Choose hikes appropriate for your ability

The Ten Essentials

  1. Map, compass, GPS etc.
  2. Head protection – (hat, skull cap, etc.)
  3. Extra clothing – (rain gear, season appropriate jacket, etc.)
  4. Headlamp or flashlight
  5. First aid kit
  6. Fire starter – (matches, lighter etc.)
  7. Knife, all purpose tool
  8. Extra food – (energy bars or chews)
  9. Hydration – ( 1 liter or 32 oz for every 2 hours on trail)

10. Emergency shelter – (space blanket, bivy sack, etc.)
