Mt Cutler update DEC 8, 2023

We received an email Sunday morning from Mt. Cutler’s Daniel Hester informing us of several updates to their trail system.

The most important is that the parking area at Hiram Hill Road (HHR) is not being plowed so we may have a snow covered lot.  We might make an effort to car pool from the church with the intention of traveling in four-wheel drive trucks or at least all-wheel drive cars.  Daniel says people have been parking roadside instead of in the lot. Jeff has reminded me that before there was a lot, we all used to park on the side of the road so ‘this ain’t the end of the world.’ [those were my words and not Jeff’s]  Daniel suggests that for roadside parking, “it is best to drive uphill beyond the parking area, turn around somewhere, drive back down past the parking area entrance and park at road-side a short distance below the parking area entrance.”  Doing so will give us a chance to check out the parking lot and then decide what we want to do.  We can send Jeff in first to test the snow depth.

Daniel also wrote, “… anyone with a high clearance 4×4 may be able to drive into the parking area, and that may help others to get to the trail head…..”

The maps we linked to in our initial post, which are on the Mt. Cutler website, are no longer accurate.

The map we linked to on Mt Cutler’s website does not show the newer trails that were built during 2019.  The NW Trail that connects from North Trail to ascend to the main ridge through the woods now slopes further to the west on the north side of the mountain. This trail also has another trailhead at a point higher on the HHR.

“ The White Flag Trail was relocated to avoid crossing neighboring property and that original part of the trail across our neighbors’ land is now called Boulder Trail. (However, both trails are OK,).”

These changes are also not the end of the world but now you know.

Once I figure out how to do it, I will post links below to all of these  newer documents:
