New Year’s Hike – January 2 – Change
Temperatures on Friday are predicted to be frigid, 0-10° with wind chills dropping the “feels like” below zero.
Last year on Peary we had to move our New Year’s celebration to the parking lot because it was too cold on the exposed summit. Therefore, we are preemptively making a change in plans for this Friday. Similar to our December 4th change, Jacob and Rena have again graciously offered their home on Peabody Pond as a base camp for an alternative hike up Moser Mountain, the hill behind their house.
Jacob has already broken out the trail and it is the same one we followed last winter when we hiked there. [mind you that was prior to yesterday’s rain.]. Therefore, those among us who are undaunted by the cold weather can hike the loop trail up to the summit. There is an added attraction this year: There is a trail packed over to the The Big Tree, a hemlock in the competition as the largest specimen in Maine. Last we heard though is that its circumferance measured a full inch less than the leading tree. Still it’s a sight worthy of our marvel. Those of us not hiking can gather at their house, and when the hikers return, we can enjoy the refreshments that we will all bring and have our winter scheduling meeting.
As of this writing Jacob and Rena are still debating whether to make chilli or lasagna.
Hikers meet at Jacob and Rena’s home: 256 Accomac Rd. N, Naples, 10:00 AM. January 2.
If we manage to hike the full loop it will take about 1 to 1 ½ hours. Those coming only for the food, Champagne and the hike scheduling meeting should plan accordingly. Of course everyone is welcome to arrive early.
