Our scheduled hike for this coming week is to the Smith Bridge Preserve. This area is part of the Western Foothills Land Trust and includes just under 500 acres of land including 185 acres of wetland along a 4 mile stretch of the Little Androscoggin River.
Trailhead Parking is at 577 Allen Hill Rd, Oxford
There are five miles of trails at this preserve. We’ll decide on a route to take once we are there and see the trail conditions.
The walking is easy and flat, consisting entirely of one-lane tracks. The preserve is named after a covered bridge (one of three) that once spanned the Little Androscoggin River, the Smith Bridge, which was built in 1832 and demolished in 1935. The ruins are still visible. but don’t get too excited, there isn’t that much left of the bridge to see.
Dale and Kitty Nelson will be leading this hike.
