In recent weeks we have seen a steady number of people subscribe to our Denmark Mountain Hiker’s mailing list. We now have about 125 people who receive these posts. We believe this surge of interest is the result of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s publication in their journal Appalachia of Allen Crabtree’s piece on “Why we hike”. In it he writes about the Denmark Hikers at length. Our assumption is that our new subscribers heard about our group by reading Allen’s article.
Allen was an aggressive promoter of our hiking club and always wanted to grow his email lists. (note the plural, “lists“). At one point he thought there were about 630 people on these lists. He never created a single list as his email server limited the number of individual email addresses on each list to less than fifty. To get around this he had more than a dozen separate lists he would broadcast each of his postings to. Unfortunately all those lists were lost with his passing. Our current list has been slowly recreated and now contains our core group of hikers and this growing unkown collection of individuals who have subescribed and often signal that they enjoy our hike reports. We think he would be pleased to see the growth of the current list.
However, Allen would be writing all of our anonymous subscribers inviting them to come meet us on just about any Friday morning over in Denmark and come along on that day’s adventure. He truly loved to hike and always wanted to share that pleasure with others.
Tomorrow is February 18, Allen’s birthday. Here are a few photos from the birthday he celebrated with his hikers last year.
