Bald Pate Hike. September 12, 2025
Meet at Denmark Church at 8:30 AM or upper Baldpate Lot at 8:45 AM
It’s become a new tradition that when the Denmark Hikers go up Baldpate that they descend down to Peabody Pond and have a meal at Jacob Schor and Rena Bloom’s house by the lake.
In mid August, Jacob reported to Allen one afternoon that he had that morning explored an old logging road on the south face of Baldpate that allowed for an interesting shortcut down to the lake and his house. Allen immediately wanted to schedule a hike and potluck so that the group could try out the ‘secret trail’. Allen was dissuaded from his idea only by our pleading that the weather was still too warm for hiking anywhere for the next week or two and allowed that we could delay the hike until September. Allen was quite eager to try out the shortcut.
Sadly Allen won’t join us on this hike but you’ll be able to imagine that he’s along with us. He wouldn’t miss this one if he had the choice. We’ll take the Bob Chase ridge line up to the summit and then descend the east tail of the South Loop trail. Several of our favorite people who run the Loon Echo Land Trust have promised to come along on this adventure. As they have asked us to keep this trail secret, we will ask them to wear blindfolds as we veer off the main path onto the shortcut. The shortcut connects to an old snowmobile trail that descends down to Two Pond Road. From there it’s a short walk to the Schor’s home.
We’ll have enough hamburgers to feed everyone. Bring whatever you think will go well with this. Rena will meet us at the upper Baldpate lot and transport any food you’ve brought down so you don’t have to carry it on the hike. We’ll carpool anyone back up who leaves their car at the lot after lunch. For those who opt for a shorter hike and want to drive directly to the Schor’s, the address is 256 Accomac N. Naples. 207 595-7651
