Hike to Oversett Pond
Moderate – Oversett Pond and Mountain (922 ft.), Greenwood, ME. 4.2 mi RT, 597 ft. of elevation gain. RT hiking 2.5 hours. RT driving 3 hrs.
Meet at the Denmark church at 8:30 am. This is the thhird time we’ve hiked over and around Oversett Pond (last times were October 2023 and June 2024 I think) but we liked it so much we wanted to come back . The exceptionally well maintained rail goes around Oversett Pond and along the Sanborn River – Thhe trip is on the Easy side of a Moderate Hike.
Directions to the Trailhead – From the intersection of Routes 118 and 117 in Norway, turn left (north) on Route 118 for 1 mile. Turn right (east) on Greenwood Road for 7.9 miles. When you reach the center of Greenwood City, turn left onto Patch Mountain Road. When the road veers in about .6 miles, go right onto Willis Mills Road and the parking area is ahead, to the left. A small two-car area is also available on Oversett Pond Lane to the right, and the path begins to the left of the gate. The trails are well signed. Parking is very limited and the neighbors do not want parking near their homes.
Oversett Pond, located in Greenwood, Maine, has a history tied to early settlement, logging, and recent efforts to manage the pond for trout fishing. The pond was originally smaller but was expanded in 1849 when a dam and sawmill were built at the outlet. The pond is now known for its trout management program, which involved chemically reclaiming the pond in 1998 to eliminate competing fish species.
A few additional tidbits of history:
- The first settlers on Oversett Pond were Calvin Cole Sr. and his sons, who lived on the west shore, historically known as Shadagee (later Greenwood Center). In 1849, Samuel B. Locke built a dam and sawmill at the pond’s outlet, significantly raising the water level.
- The original Greenwood Road was later rerouted to pass along the east shore of Twitchell Pond and then along the west shore of Oversett Pond, which is how the road runs today.
- Oversett Pond is managed for brook trout. In the past, both brook trout and brown trout were stocked annually. However, the pond was chemically reclaimed in 1998 to remove competing minnows and suckers, which were hindering trout growth.
- Following the reclamation, Oversett Pond was restocked with brook trout, and annual stockings are now required due to the lack of natural spawning habitat. The pond is closed to live bait to prevent reintroduction of competing species.
