Lows Bald Spot

Lows Bald Spot

June 12 – Moderate – Lows Bald Spot (2875 ft.) Pinkham Notch, NH.

4.4 miles RT, 1050 ft. elevation gain.  RT hiking 4.5 hours.  RT driving 2.0 – 2.5 hours.

This is a mostly moderate trail, with a bit of steep scrambling on the final approach.

Meet at the Denmark church at 8:30 AM or Pinkham Notch around 9:30 AM.

Directions to trailhead:

The trail starts at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.  Head north from North Conway on combined Routes 302 and 16.  At Glen, turn right onto Rte. 16 where it diverges from 302.  Pinkham Notch Visitor Center is 11.8 miles north on the left.  The parking lot is large, so let’s gather at the entrance from the parking lot into the main visitor center building.

One would think that Lows should be spelled with an apostrophe but apparently it isn’t.  The trail is named for Herbert Low, an early AMC member who is credited with laying out the upper trail markers.  The first section of the trail follows the Old Jackson Road, built in 1885. The Pinkham Notch AMC buildings were erected in 1920 by the way. Much of this trivia comes fro Allen Crabtree’s Facebook page “Old Geezer Goes Hiking’ on which he posted hike reports and photos of Denmark Hikers from various trips.

That Facebook page is where I downloaded this photo of Allen by the way:
