Save the Date Dec 4

Hike up Bald Pate and down to Peabody Pond to eat Potato Latkes at Jacob and Rena’s home.

Easy Hike. Exceptional Views, A short four miles of mostly easy walking, a decent meal and good company

This hike is turning into an annual pre-holiday tradition providing a good opportunity to celebrate with friends.

Here’s how it works: the hike starts at the Bald Pate upper parking lot, proceeds to the summit via the upper Bob Chase trail: than descends via the west side of the South Loop but then abruptly sneaks onto a hidden trail (that we call the Crabtree Connector) toward the Foster Pond junction but before actually arriving there, suddenly veers downhill following an old snowmobile trail to Back of the Moon Cove on the north end of Peabody Pond, and from there follows Jacob’s Shore trail home.

Total distance is about 3.7 miles, the majority of it, gently down hill on mostly soft ground. For those not prepared for such a long hike, there are shorter options.

For those not hiking that Friday, come for lunch anyway. Rena says anytime after ten AM is great.

Jacob and Rena’s address is 256 Accomac Rd. North in Naples. Google Maps works for getting there (but Waze won’t).

Text a message if you will need to park down by the house. 207-595-7651.

For those wanting a longer hike, you are welcome to turn around after lunch and trudge back up to the parking lot, but for the more sensible people, we’d be happy to ferry up the hill to your cars by road.

Most of our route is visible in this photo: from the summit of Bald Pate, the lump in the distance on the left, we come down hill a bit and then traverse right and then take a beeline down to the north end of the pond.

The evening of this hike, by the way, will mark the first night of Chanukah this year and provides us with the perfect excuse to invite all of you for a meal.

Jacob loves this chance to make significant quantities of potato latkes and applesauce to top them with. Especially for people with healthy appetites. [and yes,, if you let us know some will be gluten free.]

Everyone is welcome to treat this as a potluck and contribute whatever they wish. Rena will meet us at the start of the hike and drive any contributions you bring down to our home so you need not carry them.

256 is the very last house at the north end of Accomac Road. (picture from winter last year)

The Route: looks like this.

This map of our route was downloaded from Piper’s GPS tracker when we walked it the other day with her on a leash.
